The wrong words can wound, tear down, and destroy. Speaking love will bring life, peace, unity & freedom. But how do you speak love when unloving thoughts bombard your mind? 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV says, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” So not every thought that comes into our mind is from God, some are obedient thoughts and some are not. It depends on the nature of the thought… Is it in the nature of God? Does the thought line up with the Word of God the bible? Just because a thought comes into your mind that is a disobedient thought doesn’t mean that you have sinned, it depends on what you do next with that thought. If you resist a disobedient thought from staying in your mind, your doing good, however, if you dwell on it and it begins to take root in your “thought life” your going to have problems if it is not a good thought. Philippians 4:8 NIV says, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” James 4:7 NIV says, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Pretend you have a trap box in your mind, and in that box you force all your thoughts to stay until you decide what to do with them, whether to receive them or not. The first step is to slow down. This activity of thought collection and distribution requires patience, and slowness of speech so you can mentally process and filter the good from the bad. Ecclesiastes 5:2 NIV says, “Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.” Also in the bible James 1:19-21 NIV reads like this, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.” The Word of God and general positive thoughts of love and goodness need to be firmly planted in you, that is, planted in your heart. Proverbs 4:23 NIV says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”Secondly, create 2 shut-off valves in your thought process. One to allow thoughts to flow or be stopped from going to your heart and another to allow thoughts to flow or be stopped from leaving your mind. Here is how the valves work… When thoughts enter your mind, ask yourself these questions: “Is what I am about to say or think about promote love, peace & unity?”, “Is this thought or these words I’m about to speak true, pure or lovely?”,”Does God want me thinking or speaking this?”, “Does it line-up with the bible?” This creates an open flow to the areas where the thoughts belong or it creates a shuts off of the flow to the areas where the thoughts do not belong. If the thought DOES agrees with these questions, turn the valve fully open so it flows into your heart, and close the valve that would try to keep it from leaving your mind, pull it in by meditating on it. If the thought DOES NOT agree with these questions, humble yourself, don’t receive the lie, and turn the valve fully closed so it can not flow into your heart, and open the valve for it to leave your mind by replacing it with “the truth” of God’s Word. It may help to print out the above picture and put it on your refrigerator so you can remember.
If you allow the flow of the the wrong thoughts into your heart, they can grow and become bitter roots in your heart, and your heart will eventually overflow and speak those bad thoughts. Luke 6:45 NIV says, “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” In the same way if you decide to think on good loving things, positive thoughts, and let them flow down deep into the recesses of your heart, your heart will overflow and speak those thoughts out of your mouth. If you decide to get into the bible, the Word of God, then these are the best thoughts possible, the Word will sink down into your heart and provide a deep root of life & love, and that will sooner or latter spring forth from your life in love, truth and action. That is why it is so important to read the bible every day and meditate on it and think continually about God’s love for you, let it take root in your heart. King David said in Psalm 119:11 NIV, “I have hidden your Word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
A few last thoughts…
Are you having a hard time on earth, think about how awesome it will be in heaven. The bible says in 1 Corinthians 2:9 NKJV “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
Are you having trouble with people, perhaps alone or rejected? Think about how Jesus views it… Luke 6:22,23 says, “Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.”
Are you feeling hopeless or discouraged? Think about what God says about it… Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” God’s got a plan, be encouraged!
There are so many other wonderful scripture in the bible to think upon. Open that book, read, and think, think, think upon the great life God has for you on Earth and in heavenly eternity!
